Asbestos trust fund: what each trust pays today

An asbestos trust fund pays people hurt by a bankrupt company's asbestos products, with no trial needed. To keep money available for future patients, each trust pays just part of the value it assigns to a disease.

The ranking shows today's payout for an approved mesothelioma claim: the trust's full value multiplied by the share it pays.

How does an asbestos trust fund work?

Some companies went bankrupt after asbestos lawsuits. Their asbestos bankruptcy trusts pay those who are ill today and those who fall ill later. The U.S. Government Accountability Office states that asbestos lawsuits caused about 100 companies to go bankrupt, at least in part.

Payment percentage is the share it pays, while full value means the scheduled value the trust sets for the illness. As claims and funds shift, a trust has the ability to increase or decrease that share.

Most families hire an asbestos lawyer to file these claims, and most trusts accept them online from law firms.
